Lisa Hirmer

biography

Lisa Hirmer is a Guelph-based artist whose work combines visual art, social practice, performance, and art-based forms of critical research. Her experimental public-focused work explores and responds to the nebulous, complicated reality of public opinion (acknowledging that this is itself a complicated idea). Her work as a photographer and writer explores contemporary landscapes and built environments, focusing on material traces left by difficult to visualize political/economic/social forces at work in the world. She has presented her work across Canada and internationally, including at Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charlottetown), Harbourfront Centre (Toronto), University of Lethbridge Art Gallery, Foreman Gallery (Lennoxville), Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Peninsula Arts (Plymouth, UK), Doris McCarthy Gallery (Toronto), and Flux Factory (New York). She has recently done residencies with Arts House (Australia), the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural Wor! ld (U.K.), and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation (USA), and is the 2016 Artist in Residence for the City of Guelph.
